We’ve all heard or even said “I am so thankful God saved me from my sins.” But what we are really saying is “I am so thankful that I am forgiven and saved from Hell.” Because many of us don’t ever realize nor contemplate what it means to be forgiven and saved from our sins. The actual real effects of sin would be on us right now if we would not have been saved through His Word, Spirit, and Blood, nor what sin truly represents to God and how it affects Him. We can’t fully appreciate our deliverance from sin until we see those things clearly. We can’t praise, worship, and thank Him, from our heart, until we comprehend where we are and how we’ve hurt Him. Let’s stop and take a hard look at these things, maybe for the first time for some of us, and it will change our view of our Precious God and the sins we so often want to covet.
First, what is sin? JAMES 4:17 It’s simply knowing God and knowing His will and choosing not to follow what we clearly understand He deserves of us, but scriptures are clear how much deeper, more meaningful, and deadlier sin is than this simple definition yet we usually stop here in our minds and hearts, it is not the acts of wrong doing that makes sin so horrible, it’s the rejection of God when we choose to put something above our love for Him. Have you ever considered why God chose illustrations in both the Old and New Testaments defining sin as adultery? EZEKIEL 16:32-34 HOSEA 9:1 JAMES 4:4-5 God uses one of the most illustrative and painful comparisons that can be made to express His feelings towards us in our Sin. Sin is a purposeful rejection and betrayal by one that is loved more than life, sin is seeing the heart of one that means everything to you want someone more than they want you, sin is being forsaken by your most desired person in the world. Some of us have felt this rejection, all of us have know someone going through the experience of adultery and divorce. It is the most earth shattering, life changing, devastation one can experience. To be rejected simply because you weren’t enough to make the most important person in your life happy and fulfilled. This is why it’s God’s picture of choice of hoe He FEELS when we sin. Sin at its core is not letting God do and be all that He desires to be in our life at the deepest most intimate level, but instead lusting after something else to fill that intimate need you wouldn’t give to Him, choosing something else to give us happiness, purpose, and passion…just like choosing another person over your spouse, Sin is knowing that Someone as creative, loving, intelligent, and powerful as Jesus Christ, Who has literally traded His life to be with me eagerly passionately walking with me and yet still wanting and choosing other things with all our heart. Sin is like having a gorgeous, smart, successful spouse who gave up everything in their entire world to be with you, excited and passionate to be with you, letting their world revolve around you, and you choose to sleep with some loser who just wants to use you for their pleasure and move on. Sin is not caring how we hurt someone like that with our actions, not caring if we’re attractive to them, desired by them and yet we fix ourselves up to look our best in pursuit of attracting someone else. HOSEA 2:13 Can you see God’s expression of these very thoughts about our rejection of Him. In order to have that ultimate level of intimacy with someone you must make yourself completely vulnerable to them, this is what makes sharing and loving so sacred. Our God in His passion and humbleness for us has made Himself vulnerable to us, He has placed into our hands, to touch Him at the deepest level, to rouse His emotions, His thoughts, for us to literally greatly effect God, and our desire for sin we take that unfathomable honor and use it to make Him feel rejected and despised. How can we dare say “Why can’t You accept me as I am” when who we are is a blatant cheating, rejection of Him, selfishly chasing what we want, with no thought of loving, pleasing, or even accepting Him back? God is the ultimate victim of our sin, the One sinned against the deepest, hurt the most, and pushed away the farthest. What we seem to forget when we praise Him for saving us from our sin is where would we be without His forgiveness, wisdom, and love; to keep us from the terrible effects of sin! Without His word in our hearts and His Spirit to guide us our sins would make us care about us than anyone else in our lives right now. Massively changing our relationships, changing our trust, perseverance, and sacrifice. How many of us would not even be together today, or be in selfish misery together, or how many would be living addictive and destructive lifestyles. Sin taints our view of everything in life when left unchanged or unchecked. It changes the worth of people, the blessings of things, and the joy of living. Sin makes us to see and feel differently than God about everything in life, making it impossible to see God’s will, impossible to hear Him, impossible to have fellowship with Him because we do not want to share anything important to Him. Sin makes everything important to God to seemingly be not worthwhile to us just like a cheating spouse. Without God’s Plan and Power in us to keep us from sin all these things would have full reign in our lives, how much differently would we look right now? Now praise Him for saving us from our sin!!! Even those who passionately seek God have struggles with things luring us to infidelity against God. Often we don’t even see it, or we think we’re ok because they are not sinful in themselves, but here is a great litmus test to determine if something has become an adulteress affair in your life over God. The greatest test to recognize what affects you the greatest when it is threatened or taken away, are you the most angry (1) when your position or authority is threatened…pride has become sin (2) when your intelligence is threatened…intellect has become sin (3) are you most angered when your family is affected…family has become sin (4) upset when you’re away from sex and pornography…sex has become sin (5) are you constantly anxious or upset with having another mate…affection from others has become sin (6) do you become frantic when you can not connect with others on social media, or when you don’t get the responses you want…recognition has become sin (7) are totally incapacitated when things aren’t right with your spouse…your spouse has become sin (8) are you overwhelmed when it seems you don’t have enough money…money has become sin (9) are you crushed and to embarrassed about anyone finding out you have sinned…self righteousness has become sin (10) do you get hurt and upset when you don’t get the recognition and praise you feel you deserve…jealousy has become sin (11) has anything in your life become the sole focus of your unhappiness because you didn’t get it or lost it…that is your sin. These things are sins because they are desired with a passion that is greater than your passion for God. They are your heart’s focus, your heart beat so to speak. This is adultery!! Some of you may be saying “ok I see, how do I beat it?” Many of you may have been fighting certain sins for months or even years even when you have a legitimate desire to beat it you fail. A simple unstoppable key to breaking habitual sin is…..stop focusing on the sin!! Your focus should be on beating the sin because the real problem is not the desire for that sin the real problem is you do not desire and chase after God more! How do you beat it? You purposefully chase after a deeper relationship with God, purposely pursue Him passionately, develop such an intimacy with Him that you sin proof your relationship. Take away your desire for sin by finding such a desire for Him!! Work on drawing close to Him rather than fighting flesh, otherwise there is absolutely no basis, no motivation to really quit anything. It only becomes a shallow focus on self and performance rather than a true shift in passion and desire for Him. PSALM 119:20 ISAIAH 26:9 PSALM 42:2 SONG OF SOLOMON 7:10 If God wasn’t that passionately for our intimacy, if He didn’t see sin as bad, that personally rejecting to Him, why would He have paid such a crazy high price to forgive and save us? He is like the lover that would do anything to win his lover back, forgive anything we’ve done, but only if He knows we really want Him! Being saved from our sins forgiven and accepted is not just about understanding He really exists, or even asking Him to forgive us…it’s about seeing His real Passion, sacrifice, and deep desire for us, knowing all He has made for us, did for us, sacrificed for us, seeing His faithfulness in not giving up on us even when we reject Him. Realizing He alone wants me most, He alone is worthy of my love and devotion, He alone has proven His trustworthiness, realizing faith in Him and will never let me down of disappoint, but everything else is hollow and hurtful. It’s saying I give you my total desire, to be total appealing and acceptable to Him as I can, to put Him first, make Him feel special as He’s made me feel, to stand for Him no matter where it takes me or what it costs, simply because He is worthy and wonderful, simply because I want it to be Him and me over all the world. And accepting the Precious Blood of my intimate Beloved who did so much in desire for our relationship so that I can be with Him for all of eternity. That is having faith in God, faith in His passion and trustworthiness, not just His existence. We have to see sin for what it is, not a rule that was broken, or a choice to live another way, or a rewarding pursuit of pleasure and joy, but a cheap adulterous lover trying to steal our affections from our beloved who could care less for us in the end. Who uses us up and leaves us empty and alone, who steals our love for Him who really desires us, breaking His heart. HOSEA 2:7 HOSEA 3:1 This is His response to us when we return to Him, stop wasting time struggling, stop wasting time focusing on the cheap cheater(sin), and just focus on getting close to your Beloved so you won’t look sin’s way anymore. If you’ve never given your heart and trust to him, never accepted His gift, of His very life, to have you with Him…..what are you waiting for?
